📷 Photography guide
Start your shoot on Tsukimi-zaka among the cedar-lined approach — early morning is ideal when sunlight filters through the canopy, and misty late-autumn mornings create an especially ethereal atmosphere. Use a wide-angle lens around 24–35mm to capture the towering height of the ancient cedars and the depth of the path stretching into the distance. The Konjikido is housed inside a protective glass enclosure and cannot be photographed directly from the outside, but the centuries-old cedars standing before the outer hall and the surrounding moss-covered stone walls make for a beautifully composed shot. Peak autumn foliage runs from late October to early November, when red and yellow leaves harmonize with the weathered roof tiles of the ancient temple. For sweeping compositions of the entire precinct, a standard to medium-telephoto lens in the 50–85mm range is ideal for cleanly isolating the dignified forms of the halls and pagodas.

Overview
A sacred Buddhist site established by the Oshu Fujiwara clan in the late Heian period. The gold-leafed Konjikido (Golden Hall) was the first structure designated as a National Treasure and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2011. A walk up Tsukimi-zaka, a cedar-lined slope, leads to a serene complex of halls and pagodas.
History & Culture
In the 12th century, Kiyohira, the founding patriarch of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, built the temple to mourn the victims of war. The Konjikido, a symbol of the clan's golden culture, is regarded as the pinnacle of Heian art — its interior and exterior lavishly adorned with gold leaf, nautilus shell mother-of-pearl inlay, and lacquer maki-e.
Access
Approximately 20 minutes on foot or about 5 minutes by sightseeing loop bus from Hiraizumi Station (JR Tohoku Main Line). About 5 minutes by car from Hiraizumi-Maesawa IC on the Tohoku Expressway.
