🌸Cherry Blossoms🏯History🏞️Scenic ViewsSpringAutumn🌸 In season now

📷 Photography guide

In spring, head to the west moat (Nishi-bori) in the early morning and use a wide-angle lens (24–35mm) in landscape orientation to capture the petal-covered water surface and the castle keep in a single frame — the pink blossoms and their mirror-like reflection make for a stunning composition. When morning mist drifts through the park, the atmosphere turns ethereal, and the quieter crowds give you ample time to compose your shots. To frame the keep against the cherry blossoms, move to the north enclosure (Kita-no-kuruwa) and use a medium telephoto lens (70–135mm) to compress the scene, isolating the keep rising above the fully bloomed branches for a sense of depth. In autumn, the low-angled afternoon light beautifully accentuates the texture of the stone walls and the richness of the fall colors — a portrait-orientation shot from Jojo Bridge (Jojo-bashi) with the keep in the background is a classic composition. In any season, arrive at least 30 minutes early to make the most of the golden hour when the light sits low on the horizon.

Overview

Home to one of Japan's 12 remaining original castle keeps, Hirosaki Castle sits within Hirosaki Park — one of the country's most celebrated cherry blossom destinations. Around 2,600 cherry trees bloom each spring, and the sight of fallen petals forming a floral carpet (hanaikada) across the moat is truly breathtaking. The park transforms again in autumn with vibrant fall foliage, and in winter with the enchanting Snow Lantern Festival.

History & Culture

Founded in 1611 by the Tsugaru clan, Hirosaki Castle is the only castle in the Tohoku region where the original keep, turrets, and gates from the Edo period still stand. It also gained widespread attention when the keep was relocated using a traditional building-sliding technique (hikiya) to allow for stone wall repairs.

Access

From Hirosaki Station (JR Ou Main Line), take a bus for approximately 15 minutes and alight at the "Shiyakusho-mae" stop. By car, approximately 25 minutes from the Owani-Hirosaki IC on the Tohoku Expressway.
