The prime shooting window is during the snowy winter months, from dusk into the night. The Taisho-era wooden ryokan lining the Ginzan River begin lighting their exterior lamps around 4:00–5:00 PM, creating a breathtaking blue hour when the cool twilight afterglow and warm gas lamp light coexist. For a wide shot of the inn-lined riverbank from a snow-covered alley, use a 24–35mm equivalent wide-to-standard lens to capture a sense of depth that highlights the compact density of this valley-hugged hot spring town. To make the most of the ryokan reflections on the river surface, try a low, level angle close to the water. A tripod is essential since handheld shooting will not suffice in low light — carefully balance your exposure to preserve both the warm glow of the inn windows and the brightness of the snow while keeping ISO as low as possible.

Overview
A secluded hot spring town nestled in the mountains on the site of a former silver mine. Multi-story wooden ryokan from the Taisho and early Showa eras line both banks of the Ginzan River, and when gas lamps flicker on at dusk, the town transforms into a hauntingly nostalgic world apart.
History & Culture
These ancient waters are said to have been discovered by miners of the Nobesawa Silver Mine, which thrived in the early Edo period. After a major flood during the Taisho era, the buildings were rebuilt in the distinctive retro architectural style that gives the town its unique character today.
Access
Approximately 40 minutes by bus from Oishida Station (JR Yamagata Shinkansen line). About 20 minutes by car from the Obanazawa IC on the Tohoku Chuo Expressway. Exercise caution on snowy roads in winter.
