📷 Photography guide
The magic hour just after sunrise turns the island silhouettes a deep crimson, making it the best time for photography in Matsushima. From Otakamori — one of the four great viewpoints known as Shidaikan — you can look out over the entire archipelago; a wide-angle lens equivalent to 24–35mm captures an expansive composition with a strong sense of depth. On the deck of a sightseeing cruise, try placing a nearby island in the foreground and using a telephoto lens (100–200mm) to compress the layered islands behind it, creating a rhythmic visual effect. At sunset, aligning the vermillion Godaido with the orange-tinted sea creates a striking contrast of colors. In autumn, the red-tinged pines reflected on the islands add rich color, while in summer, including towering cumulus clouds enhances the sense of season and open sky.
