📷 Photography guide

To capture the full impact of the black walls against the weeping cherry blossoms, head out at dawn before the crowds arrive. Raking sidelight at that hour brings out the fine grain of the wooden walls and the delicate texture of the branches. Use a 24–35mm wide-angle to standard lens to emphasize the depth of the street, and shoot in portrait orientation to frame the arch of overhanging branches as a tunnel — conveying the sheer volume of blossoms. In autumn, the stark black walls pop dramatically against the crimson and orange foliage; a 50–85mm lens works well to isolate clusters of leaves against the wall. In both seasons, a clear morning with blue sky adds strong color contrast that overcast light simply cannot provide.

Overview

A historic castle town often called the "Little Kyoto of Tohoku." Along the samurai quarter's long stretches of black-painted wooden walls, ancient weeping cherry trees drape their branches overhead — forming a breathtaking tunnel of blossoms in spring and a vivid tapestry of autumn foliage in fall.

History & Culture

Laid out as a samurai town in 1620 by the Ashina clan, Kakunodate has preserved its original feudal-era street plan and residences to this day, earning designation as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. Legend has it that the town's iconic weeping cherry trees descend from saplings brought from Kyoto by a princess who married into a local lord's family.
